This month the Alliance for Excellent Education released a policy brief describing a different notion for the preparation of secondary teachers that, in turn, will prepare high school students for the world of college and work after graduation. Teaching for a New World: Preparing High School Educators to Deliver College- and Career-Ready Instruction suggests several ways teacher preparation programs and policymakers can make this occur:
-
Develop skills, knowledge and competencies of secondary teacher candidates and recognize the strengths and experiences they bring with them;
-
Improve teacher performance assessments emphasizing data that informs candidates about areas where their practice can be improved and assists revisions and modifications to preparation programs;
-
Implement robust data systems to assist policymakers and practitioners in analyzing areas needing improvement; and
-
Identify priorities in teacher preparation where federal policy can make investments.
