NBCT Network Newsletter: August 2009

"I want teachers to know how powerful their voice and experience truly is."

These words come straight from PESB member Shannon Lawson. In our continuing effort to bring clarity to Washington's complex education system, we are focusing this month on the Professional Educators Standards Board. Our interview with Shannon taught us a lot about the board and its purpose. Created just nine years ago, the PESB was initially considered to be an advisory board to the governor, legislature, State Board of Education and OSPI. However, 9 years later, PESB now has the responsibility and authority for policy and oversight of Washington's system of educator preparation, certification, continuing education and assignment. Comprised of 16 members, the board is made up of teachers, principals, superintendents and educational staff associates.

If you're interested in learning more about the standards board, check out the WNN webpage for general information, as well as meeting times and places. To read more of Shannon Lawson's interview, click here. You can also go straight to the PESB webpage at http://www.pesb.wa.gov/ for further information.

And remember...all the organizations we've focused on this year-your local School Board, the State Board of Education, OSPI, State Legislature and PESB-exist to serve you and more importantly, your students! Take the time to get to know them and their purpose. This is the time to contact your legislator or develop a relationship with a board member. In Shannon's own words, "When we have testimonials from educators, it directly offers us the insight we need to make the best decisions for students that we can make...Please get involved! The meetings are scheduled across the state to encourage participation." Opening the lines of communication NOW can mean powerful influence later on. And remember to check out the changes on the WNN webpage. The "Legislative Toolkit" and "Steps to Getting Involved" are great places to get ideas on how to start the process. It is only through open communication with ALL partners in education that we can effect change for Washington's children.

Wishing you a restful August (at least the beginningJ)...
